January 31We went to a good friend’s birthday party today. It was a swimming party at an indoor heated pool. Though the weather was so nice, outdoors would have been ok too! Here is a picture of the birthday girl just before blowing out the candles on her cake.

Peter’s Cub Scout Pack had its Pinewood Derby tonight. His car, named “American Thunder,” made a respectable showing. It ran in 4 heats of 4 cars each, and got one 2nd place and three 3rd place finishes. His car was faster than a number of the others, but kept getting put into heats with the really fast cars! He got a trophy for participating, and he was actually just pleased that he didn’t come in last.

Update: Peter finished 6th in the Tiger Cub class. He missed the finals by only 0.02 seconds!

January 29Doorknob hangers seem to be a favorite craft activity for kids. Peter recently made this one at church. Cool.

My Favorite….Pen

January 28I thought it might be fun to periodically take pictures of my favorite things (cue the “Sound of Music” soundtrack here…). This is my absolute favorite pen. Peter made it for me for Mother’s Day last year. It is just a Bic with a big silk flower wrapped on it with floral tape, but he was so proud of it, and made such a cute card to go along with it, that it has special meaning for me. And I’m such a girlie-girl — who couldn’t love this pen with a huge flower on it? If I need something to write with, this is the pen I’ll look for first and will use another one only if this one cannot readily be found.

January 27Hubby got a new guitar for Christmas and is now taking lessons. He has the amazing ability to hear a song and then sit down and play it. But the lessons are teaching him the different chords and techniques. It’s fun to listen to him learn to play new songs

January 26I hosted a private event tonight at one of these places that lets you prepare frozen meals that you can then thaw and quickly cook for your family. A bunch of my friends had never done it before and wanted to try, so I put this private session together for us. What fun! I made 12 meals that are now happily tucked away in my freezer, waiting to be thawed and eaten. And many thanks to my friend Rina who gave me half of her molten chocolate cakes. YUMMMMMM!

Year of the Ox

January 25Tomorrow is Chinese New Year. It will usher in the Year of the Ox. When I went to the grocery store to do the weekly shopping this afternoon, I suddenly got a whim to buy some fresh flowers to brighten up the house. Maybe because it’s been so dreary and gray outside. In any event, instead of heading directly for the bread aisle, I turned right and stopped at the floral shop. To my surprise, they had special bouquets for Chinese New Year with brightly colored red and yellow flowers. The one I picked up had this tag on it. I guess with the economy the way it is, I’m not necessarily hoping for fortune; I’m just hoping not to lose a fortune!
