Jury Duty

March 31I had jury duty today. Unlike 99.99999999% of people in America, I actually look forward to jury duty. I’m a law geek, and I think it’s neat to see our system in action. As it turned out, there was very little action today. The criminal defendants in both cases set for trial ended up taking plea bargains. So we all got to go home with a promise that we wouldn’t be called again for at least 3 years. Oh well, I guess I’ll get to try again in 2012!

Lord of the Apple Rings

March 30Tonight was Peter’s night to cook. For several weeks, he has been wanting to cook a recipe called “Lord of the Apple Rings.” But negligent Mommy couldn’t ever seem to get all of the right ingredients into the house at the same time. Until today.

As part of the process, we had to core and slice a Granny Smith apple. It was the first time he had ever cored an apple, and he thought it was pretty cool. Then I remembered an idea I had seen my friend Gretchen’s photo blog, Snap Cake (see Blogroll at left), where she took a photo of her daughter through the center of a ring toy. So, here is Peter, as seen through the center of a Granny Smith apple (he is holding up the apple core, still in the corer).

The recipe, by the way, did not make the repeat play list. It was apple rings, brushed with butter, and topped with a meatball made of breadcrumbs, spinach and chicken apple sausage and dusted with cinnamon. Not really a taste sensation.

March 29I finally grew tired of answering no to the question, “Are you on Facebook?” So I gave in to the peer pressure this weekend and joined the crowd. It has been good to get in touch with some friends I had lost contact with over the years and to have a new way to communicate with my friends I see all the time.

I didn’t want to be an anonymous purple silhouette for long, so I had Hubby take a photo of the boys and me for my profile. This is the picture I’m using. I don’t like the weird shadows, but it’s the best I could do on short notice.

Flying Pizza

March 28We went to Antonio’s Flying Pizza for dinner. It had been years (pre-kids) since we had eaten there. I had hoped to get a photo of the guy throwing the pizza dough. But when I got there, I realized I had forgotten to put a CF card in the camera. D’oh!

But the pizza guy was nice enough to give the boys their own hunks of dough to play with. They tried to make their own flying pizza when we got home. Things got a little nutty.

March 27After Jacob’s t-ball game on Friday, we dined on the patio at Ninfa’s (yes, we eat there a lot). Jacob was trying to whisper something in Peter’s ear. Whatever it was must have been hilarious.

Why Did It Have To Be Snakes?

March 26I found out on Tuesday that Jacob is supposed to turn in a science fair project on Friday. Apparently, the announcement had been made in the school newsletter before Spring Break. But we no longer get a hard copy of the newsletter; as of this school year, it is published online only. Well, after 5 years with kids at this school, I admit that I really don’t have much interest in the newsletter anymore. And when Peter was 5, science fair was not mandatory. They went and changed the rules on me!

So we asked Jacob what he wanted his project to be about, and he decided on snakes. We also made a tri-fold display board with some pictures and facts about snakes. Peter and I were laughing because almost every sentence Jacob wrote about snakes ended in an exclamation point. When I asked him about this, he said he is really excited about snakes!

We also made clay models of a milk snake and a coral snake to show how similar they are. When I asked him to label them, he wrote “Coral Snake!” and “Milk Snake!” Peter decided that the excitement in the labels is because the snakes are racing across a body of poisoned water. Not sure why the water is poisonous, but I suppose that’s because I’m not a 7-year-old boy.

March 25Don’t you just love those freckles? This is my friend Stephanie’s son. He wasn’t feeling too much like playing t-ball tonight. Eventually, he got his wish because it poured down rain, and everyone ran for their cars!
