The End of an Era

June 4Sigh. Today, we donated Hubby’s 1994 Ford Escort to charity, and they came to tow it away. It was a trusty little car that we used regularly until Hubby bought his SUV in 2001. Since that time, it has been our “emergency” car that we used if one of our regular cars had to go into the shop.

We went on our first date in this car. We drove to and from Austin in this car more times than I can remember. We moved into our first apartment with this car. Though we rarely gave the car a second thought while it sat in the garage, we are now both a little sentimental. That car represents our lives before marriage and kids and watching it roll out of our driveway on the back of a tow truck was a little sad–somehow a tangible confirmation that we’ll never get that life back. It’s not that we want that life back, but it’s just human nature, I guess, to cling to some hope that your days of youthful exuberance and lack of responsibility may somehow return. I guess that’s what a mid-life crisis is all about. Thankfully, we’re not quite there yet!

Bye-bye, car. So many memories are made in cars, it’s not surprising when it’s a little hard to give them up.
