Peter’s Plant

June 25This looks just like any other ordinary house plant. But looks can be deceiving. This is not just any plant. It is Peter’s plant.

In Montessori schools, they often encourage the children to bring a plant to keep in the classroom. It is something that belongs to the child and that he or she can learn to nurture, love and care for. When Peter was 4, he moved into Ms. Olga’s classroom, and we bought him this plant. The next year, he left for public school, but that same year, Jacob moved up into Ms. Olga’s class at age 3.

For two years, Jacob meticulously cared for Peter’s plant — watering it and even washing the leaves with a sponge. As a result, it has grown quite a bit larger than when we first bought it. When Jacob left the Montessori school in May, Peter’s Plant came home with him.

Because it appears that Jacob may not have inherited the black thumb that has deep genetic roots on my side of the family, I’m hoping he’ll be able to keep it alive. Of course, he’s gone traveling with his grandparents for 2 weeks, so I’m doing the best I can until he returns!
