Geek Tree

Peter’s birthday is just a few days before Christmas.  We usually have his party on the 2nd weekend in December.  Since his first birthday, I have made a concerted effort to ensure that his birthday was not lumped in with Christmas.  As part of that effort, I typically do not put up any Christmas decorations at the house until after his party.  In the years when there are 2 weekends between his birthday party and Christmas, this works out fine.  But for the last couple of years, we’ve had only 1 weekend in between, which makes it a bit of a scramble.  I haven’t really been putting up many decorations other than the tree and we’ve all felt like we didn’t really get in the Christmas spirit.

Last year, Peter asked me why we didn’t put up the decorations earlier.  I explained to him that I wanted to make sure that he did not feel that we had trampled over his birthday in the mad rush to Christmas.

This year, Hubby suggested that we put up the tree on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  I asked Peter if this would be ok with him, and he excitedly agreed.  So for 8 years, I’ve been agonizing over the birthday/Christmas dichotomy, and it has apparently all been in vain!

We put up our big tree, as always.  But last year we started a new tradition — the geek tree.  It started when Hubby found a few Star Trek ornaments.  We put them on a small, 3-foot tree, which had been our first Christmas tree when we were dating in law school.  That tree had seen better days, so we purchased a new 4-foot tree on sale.  We bought more Star Trek ornaments and moved some of our Star Wars ornaments over from the big tree.

I loved this shot of the Starship Enterprise, which appears to be flying out from the Christmas tree on its mission to explore strange new worlds and seek out new civilization.
