I was the spelling bee champion of my school for 4 years running (4th-7th grade).  Winning the school bee entitled me to compete in the citywide bee.  My best showing was placing 4th in the city of Houston when I was in 4th grade — before they divided up the age groups like they do now.

I remember that I wore my maroon sweater dress with white tights for that bee.  And I remember how much bigger all the other kids were.  Each time it was my turn to spell, I had to pull the microphone waaaaaaaay down to my level.  I missed on one of the advanced words — banderillero.  I looked it up when I got home.  The banderillero is the guy who sticks the “flags” (the point, sharp things with colorful flags) into the bull during a bullfight.

I have always been a good speller.  It’s in my genes.  My mom won the spelling bee at her school, too.  I’m way beyond 4th grade now, but I have the chance to participate in another spelling bee.  On January 6th, the Houston Bar Association is holding tryouts for its team that will enter the Houston Read Commission’s Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee.  I decided to try out this year.  The beginner and intermediate level words are pretty easy.  But the advanced words are hard.  “Banderillero”  is not one of them.
