Quick, Find Me A Triangular Prism!

May 14On Tuesday, Peter came home from school with an assignment saying that he had to bring to school on Friday at least one example of the following solids from regular household items: sphere, cube, cone, pyramid, rectangular prism and triangular prism.

Some of these were easy — a ball is a sphere, a toilet paper roll is a cylinder. But look around your house and tell me if you can find a triangular prism. If you have one laying around your house, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Some of the shapes we didn’t have around the house, and so we went to Hobby Lobby after work to buy some styrofoam or wooden shapes. We ran into 2 other moms there, and none of us could find a pyramid. Finally, we found 3 connected pyramids in an Egyptian-themed toy set. We split the cost of the toy set three ways and split the pyramids apart so that each of our kids got one.*

With everything else taken care of, the triangular prism was the only one that continued to stump us. Finally, the light bulb went on in Hubby’s head, and he thought of a Toblerone bar. We had to go to 3 different stores to find one! At least we got a sweet treat from all the effort we had to go through to find the doggone thing.

*I must say that I was incredibly relieved to see that we weren’t the only slacker family that had waited until the night before the assignment was due to gather up the materials!
